Verified and prepared on **8 September 2026**. The JSON contains **28 states, 8 union territories, and 4,138 city/town/locality choices**, nested under their regions. All 36 regions have English and Hindi labels and at least one real city or inhabited community.

The region roster matches the Government of India's [NIC Integrated Government Online Directory](https://igod.gov.in/sg/states), which displayed an update date of 3 September 2026. The [Ministry of Home Affairs list of eight union territories](https://www.mha.gov.in/en/division_of_mha/AGMUT_Cadre_Management) verifies the classifications. Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is represented once, with Daman, Diu, Silvassa, Amli and Dadra beneath it.

The source is [Countries States Cities Database](https://github.com/dr5hn/countries-states-cities-database), pinned to commit `b3b49250ff3906f6119e16c088c0053a2c972926` dated 25 August 2026. Its 4,198 India records were normalized by excluding 71 administrative-area, abandoned, malformed or duplicate records and adding 11 supported choices: Imphal, Amaravati and nine Lakshadweep island communities alongside existing Kavaratti. The JSON preserves exact source URLs, upstream IDs, exclusions, corrections and counts. Supported corrections include Sri Vijaya Puram, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Dharashiv, Ahilyanagar, Prayagraj and several misassigned regional records.

**Coverage:** This is a broad community navigation database, not a census of every settlement or an authoritative list of statutory cities. It includes towns, neighborhoods and inhabited island communities; coverage is uneven. Some outdated names, duplicates and classification errors may remain. City Hindi labels come mainly from upstream community translations and need editorial review. Region Hindi labels were edited for this asset.

Region types are `state` or `union-territory`. All slugs are ASCII; city slugs are unique within each region. Keep committed slugs stable and build city routes from both region and city slugs. `sourceStateCode` is upstream reference data, not a separately verified current ISO code.

Validation passed for all 36 regions, 4,138 unique entry IDs, complete English/Hindi label fields, region-local slug uniqueness, nonempty city lists, current merged-UT representation and valid featured-city references.
